1930s Hand-Painted Brass Compact — British Folk Figure with Original Mirror
1930s Hand-Painted Brass Compact — British Folk Figure with Original Mirror

Someone painted this figure by hand ninety years ago and it still has personality to spare.
This oval brass compact from 1930s Britain features a hand-painted folk figure — a young woman in red boots and a blue dress carrying what appears to be a cross or spindle — set against a slate-grey enamel field and framed by a geometric border. The painting has the slightly naive, slightly bold quality of interwar British folk decoration — charming without being precious.
Open the clasp and you’ll find the original beveled mirror and a pink silk powder puff, both showing their age in the most honest way possible. The brass body has developed a warm patina that gives it real weight in the hand.
This is a vanity piece, a conversation piece, or just a beautiful small object that belongs on a tray with other things you’ve collected over time. Not everything needs to be monumental. Some things just need to be interesting.
